Pontefract Castle
In the Middle Ages,
Pontefract Castle was one of the most important
fortresses in the country. It became a royal castle
in 1399, upon the accession of Henry Bolinbroke
to the throne. Richard II subsequently died in the
castle the following year after being one of many
important prisoners to lodge there.

Pontefract is one of the best appointed

The racing programme has been
greatly improved in recent years and is
both competitive and entertaining.
Pontefract Liquorice Festival

The town of Pontefract provides a fantastic
backdrop to the annual Liquorice festival.
In this unique historic market town with a
Norman Castle, you can catch the aroma of
warm liquorice emanating from the town's
sweet factories.
Pontefract All Saints Church

There has been a church here or close by since Anglo
Saxon times, and it even featured in the Domesday Book
survey in the year 1086. The present church was built
around the 1300s, but only a few parts of that church now
remain. In 1536 when Henry the 8th announced
dissolution it sparked an uprising known as the
Pilgrimage of Grace, many supporters went to Pontefract
to establish themselves in the nearby castle.
